A Dish of Ice Cream

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10 year old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.

“How much is an ice cream sundae?”

“50 cents,” replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied a number of coins in it.

“How much is a dish of plain ice cream?” he inquired. Some people were now waiting for a table and the waitress was a bit impatient.

“35 cents,” she said brusquely.

The little boy again counted the coins. “I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said.

The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and departed.

When the waitress came back, she began wiping down the table and then swallowed hard at what she saw.

There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were 15 cents – her tip.

Movie Review: Source Code

With his debut movie Moon, Duncan Jones made a mighty leap; now with this superb follow-up, he has hit the ground sprinting. Source Code is a terrifically exciting and hugely enjoyable sci-fi thriller, written by Ben Ripley. For pure entertainment, there's nothing around to touch it.

Source Code
Production year: 2011
Country: Rest of the world
Cert (UK): 12A
Runtime: 93 mins
Directors: Duncan Jones
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jeffrey Wright, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga

Source Code is about conspiracies, altered minds and altered states, far-fetched in the most elegant and Hitchcockian way, and the sheer outrageousness of it all is muscular and streamlined. The film is about modified reality and inner space, and there are points of comparison with Christopher Nolan's Inception. But the world of Source Code seems to me more interesting, and more able to incubate real drama, real suspense and even some real humour.

At its centre is Colter Stevens, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, a US army helicopter pilot who has crashed in Afghanistan. When he comes to, he finds himself in civilian clothes aboard a crowded commuter train arriving slightly late into Chicago on a glorious summer morning. He appears to be in someone else's body: that of a suburban teacher. Opposite him sits Christina (Michelle Monaghan) who behaves as if a brief nap has merely interrupted their highly flirtatious conversation, but she is then increasingly alarmed as Colter, wild-eyed and panicky, demands to know what is happening and what is going on.

After eight minutes, a catastrophic event then hurls Colter back into a situation that is in some ways even more perplexing. He is in uniform, injured and immobilised in what appears to be part of a wrecked military aircraft. Is this real? Or is it the train that's real? Through a video monitor, he must communicate with a woman who is evidently now his commanding officer. Goodwin, played by Vera Farmiga, treats him with the same unreadable solicitousness as Kevin Spacey's robot-voice did with Sam Rockwell in Moon.

Without consenting, Colter has evidently been dragooned into a new mission using futurist technology known as "source code"; he has been brought back from Afghanistan – or has he? – and ordered to relive the past eight minutes on a Chicago commuter train over and over again until he discovers vital information. Ripley and Jones show how each metaphysical go-around discloses more clues; each makes Colter fall for Christina a little more, and each makes the thought of losing her seem more unbearable.

With its train setting and Chris Bacon's score imitating the jagged clamour of Bernard Herrmann, the movie is clearly indebted to the Hitchcock of North By Northwest and Strangers on a Train. But it's also a particularly tense and fraught kind of Groundhog Day, and just as in that film, repetition endows banal, forgettable events with an eerie familiarity and inevitability.

Yet in the Bill Murray movie, our hapless hero had all the time in the world, an infinity of time, as many Groundhog Days as he needed, to learn the piano until he was at the level at which he could casually appear to be a brilliant pianist to impress a woman. Making an impression on a woman is not wholly absent from Colter's mind either, but he can't just repeat his eight minutes ad infinitum, because the security situation is pressing and time is running out. Each time he starts again, his own physical condition in the mysterious cockpit deteriorates, and Goodwin and her shadowy boss Rutledge (Jeffrey Wright) are keeping secrets from him.

Source Code is glitzy and hi-tech in a 21st-century way, but also has something from an earlier age: it is a story from the Twilight Zone, with hints of Philip K Dick, and traces of the television world of The Prisoner and The Fugitive. With its weird deployment of playing cards in one scene, Jones has channelled The Manchurian Candidate – perhaps specifically through Jonathan Demme's Iraq-themed remake – and the overall effect is smart and to the point.

In its own way, Source Code also aspires slightly to the status of comedy, and Colter's increasingly wan and desperate conversations with Goodwin from his mysterious pod reminded me a little of David Niven's radio conversations with Kim Hunter's June in A Matter of Life and Death – as he plummets to his certain death, Niven's character exploits his prerogative as a dying man to flirt with this radio operator.

This isn't exactly what is happening here, and Colter's affections are engaged with Christina, not Goodwin – but equipoised with the action and thrills, there is a serio-comic sense of fantasy and romance that have been endangered by this terrifying situation in one sense, but in another sense made possible by it. Source Code is absurd, but carries off its absurdity lightly and stylishly. It is a luxuriously enjoyable film. Jones has put himself into the front-rank of Hollywood directors, the kind who can deliver a big studio picture with brains. With twists and turns, and at breathtaking speed, this film runs on rails.

HOLIDAY!

Holiday.. Such a miracle invention for human being. This is my boring holiday, happy reading!

CHAPTER ONE: BACK DESK
Bakdes or Bakti Desa is a routine school program which held once a year for the eleventh grader. It was held to fulfill our 60 hours of field duty related to 1567. I don't really know which number is related to Bakdes but I think it was 9. Let me start my Bakdes Journal.

I went to Sukapura, a village in South Bandung on 17th December 2013. I went there by a army's truck. The journey took about 3 hours from my school to the village. After we arrived, we did some boring activity in the village hall but it was paid when we arrived at my foster parents house. I stayed there for 3 days with Chiko and A Dude. The house is nice, especially the food and bathroom. It was an honor to take a bath in a bathroom with a window facing the kitchen.. My foster parents is very very nice, she's Ms. Any and Mr. Emen. I did a lot fun activity there, I don't have much time to explain it with words, so I'll explain it with some pictures.
Pirates as teachers, worst school ever.

My favorite student. I named him Adam.

My polychromatic task

My friends happy resting and eating while the parents working

My messy long hair

My family

A happy frog enjoying the view

Charm Seller

Chiko's butt
Bonus:
Harvest Moon: Back to Sukapura
CHAPTER TWO: GO TO A VERY BEAUTIFUL BEACH IN BABEL BEACH WITH NONSTOP RAIN POURING WHICH SCREW MY HOLIDAY

CHAPTER THREE: STAYING AT HOME LIKE A BOSS

That's my holiday. Sorry for the randomness. Enjoy breathing!

Natural Phenomenon: Volcanic Lightning

Lightning in the ash cloud from the 11:20 PM March eruption at 11:26.  Photo by Bretwood Higman
These photos of lightning in a volcanic ash cloud from Redoubt Volcano were taken by Bretwood Higman. The camera was mounted under the yurt where he lives in Seldovia, Alaska, and was set to automatically take a 30 second photo every two minutes. Seldovia is 80 miles from the volcano, on the far side of Cook Inlet. Two eruptions are captured in the photos, the first at 11:20 pm on March 27, and the second two hours later. The camera, a Canon Digital Rebel XTi with a Canon 70-200mm L lens, was only barely able to resolve the eruption cloud illuminated by the lightning, which is why the images appear noisy.

For both of these eruptions, the lightning did not begin until several minutes after the explosion began. How lightning forms in general is still debated among scientists, and volcanic lightning is even less well understood. What is mostly agreed upon is that the process starts when particles separate, either after a collision or when a larger particle breaks in two. Then some difference in the aerodynamics of these particles causes the positively charged particles to be systematically separated from the negatively charged particles. Lightning is the electrical flow that results when this charge separation becomes too great for air to resist the flow of electricity. Some of the lighting strokes in these photos are at least 2 miles long, so the separation of charged particles must occur on this scale.

Next Leader

I forgot the old speech, so these speech is probably shorter than the old ones.

Assalamualaikum.

Good morning boys, girls, teachers and parents my name is Syifaulqulub. Even though I only started here at at the beginning of this year for the School Captain, I’ve already been involved in many aspects of School life here. I’ve represented or participated in numerous school events such as district football, ICT, Badminton, friendship buddies, Movie Production, DKM, Inter School Chess and many more. At each of these events I have always tried my best or pursued the school motto “knowledge is power but character is more” as well as and displayed good sportsmanship.

Why am I going for school captain? I am going for school captain because I want to represent my school in the best way possible and put something back into the school which has given me so many opportunities not available at my previous school. I am also going for Captain because I want to make the best commitment to this school. I will lead this school so it can have a tighter relationship with both students and the community. I understand that I have to give up my own time for this school and everyone at this school but I’m very happy to do just that.

I believe if elected, I would make a great school Captain as I enjoy helping others and believe I always set a good example for other students to follow, both in and outside the classroom. I always like to try my best at anything and everything I do and I enjoy contributing to the school in any way possible.

The school motto is “Knowledge is Power But Character is More” and that is what I hope to do if I am elected Captain. I see a School Captain as having a key role in being a good role model and leader to the younger students, especially through our four main School Rules related to being environmentally friendly, being a good learner, respectful and safe. These are all areas in which I have a strong conviction and I believe that I would be just that person.

So you should remember to make me school Captain because I’m fit for the job and make sure you put the number 1 next to my name and photo which is at the bottom right of the voting card. I would like to finish by wishing the other nominees good luck and thank you for listening to my speech.

Remember Vote #4 Syifaulqulub!

Analytical Exposition

HOUSEWIVES SHOULD BE PAID FOR THEIR WORK
Introduction :
The role of women in the family and the workplace has been an issue of great change and even greater implication throughout recent history. Changing social constructions of gender roles and family roles has led to a debate over the role of women in the home and the value or lack thereof placed upon it. If the role of women is no longer always in the home should there be some compensation for those who do still agree to remain housewives (or very occasionally househusbands) in return for the work they do? The debate over housewives being paid for their work is one of entitlement, economics and social engineering.
Although this is a primarily a principled debate, one possible skeleton model for this case would be to propose that all housewives would be given equal salary from the government fund that is funded through tax payer dollars. This would be carried out in the form of tax exemptions and tax rebates that would be doled out via the institutions and processes currently in place for tax returns, auditing etc. An example of this would be the Internal Revenue Service in the United States or the Canada Revenue Agency in Canada.
Benefits :
There are many benefits in this case such as the family income is increased, decreasing criminality, happy family, happy live, better live, and better future.
Disadvantages :
If housewives are paid for their work, it'll make people especially women become lazier and lazier which can endanger the next generation behavior.
Conclusion :
The conclusion is paid housewives is one of many government method for increasing people welfare. It have many benefits and also disadvantages.

How To Make U.S. Student Visa

If you’ve decided that an American education is right for you, the only thing standing in your way is a little bit of paperwork. Whether you’re bound for Harvard or cosmetology school, all international students studying in the United States are required to obtain a student or exchange visa. Here’s a breakdown of everything you’ll need to know about the visa process.

There are three types of student visas, each with its own slightly different set of requirements. Students attending an accredited U.S. college, university, or English language institute will need an F-1 visa or a J-1 visa. J-1 students tend to be those that are government sponsored, on exchange programs for a semester or year, or U.S. government sponsored. Students involved in non-academic pursuits at either trade or vocational institutions will need an M-1 visa. Although the stipulations of each type of visa vary slightly, all three visas require the student to maintain a full course load.

The first step toward studying in the United States is to get accepted into an American institution or exchange program. Once you are accepted, you will have to provide a financial guarantee showing that you have the funds to attend the school. The school will review and verify your financial information, and then will send you a Certificate of Eligibility (form I-20 for the F-1 Student Visa or DS-2019 for the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa). You can schedule your visa interview once you have your Certificate of Eligibility; make sure to pay the SEVIS fee and the visa application fee before your interview date.

The next step is to complete a visa application (form DS-156) and a contact information/work history statement (form DS-158); both forms are available at your local U.S. embassy or consulate office or online at http://travel.state.gov/visa/frvi/forms/forms_1342.html. In addition, the DS-157 form is required of all male applicants aged 16 to 45 and all applicants over age 16 (male or female) who are citizens of Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, or Syria.

Note: The new DS-160 online visa application will eventually replace the DS-156 and DS-158 forms. Please visit the Web site noted above for a list of locations where the DS-160 is currently available.

Additional Items

You will also need to provide the following:

A passport valid for at least six months after you enter the United States
One passport-size photograph (photo requirements are available online at http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/info/info_1287.html)
A receipt for the nonrefundable visa processing fee (from a specific bank in each country that is identified on the consulate Web page)
A SEVIS receipt (see www.ice.gov/sevis/i901/index.html)
Transcripts and diplomas from institutions you’ve previously attended (not always required and may need to be translated)
Documented proof that you or your parents will have enough money to cover tuition and living expenses for the duration of your stay
Documentation that you intend to return to your home country after finishing your course of study; this type of documentation can include (but isn’t limited to) proof of property or assets remaining in the home country, proof of immediate relatives in the home country, or letters from future employers
Once you’ve organized your documentation, you’ll need to make an appointment for your visa interview with your local U.S. embassy or consulate. Procedures on obtaining a visa interview vary from country to country. To get the most accurate information, consult the U.S. embassy Web site for your country at www.embassy.state.gov.

The Interview

Tracking down the documentation is the hard part. Once you’ve scheduled the interview, you will only be asked questions verifying why you’re traveling to the United States, what you intend to study, and when you intend to leave. The interview will take place at your local U.S. embassy or consulate office. Although the length of the interview will vary from office to office, interviews are typically very short, lasting no longer than 30 minutes—in fact, only two to five minutes in most cases!

Visas can be issued up to 120 days (four months) before the scheduled date of departure. In order to make sure that you have your visa before your first day of classes, apply as soon as possible and provide enough lead time to wait for processing, as well as an interview. If you do not receive your visa within two to three weeks of completing your interview, contact your embassy or consulate to track your application packet.

After You Arrive

You can arrive in the U.S. no earlier than 30 days before the start date on your immigration document (I-20 or DS-2019). If you will arrive later than the start date on your immigration document, you should notify the school so that your arrival date can be deferred. After you’ve received your visa and arrived in the United States, you are required to report to your institution’s international programs office to ensure that you’ve been officially registered by the school. Most international offices will provide information on when to report, but if there is no information, you should report within 15 days of the start date on the immigration document. Designed as a one-stop resource for non-native college students, the international programs office will be able to answer any questions you may have regarding immigration rules, visa or passport renewals, obtaining financial aid, or on-campus opportunities for foreign students. Please check your pre-arrival packet for your institution’s policy.

My Questions:
1. When to apply those visas
2. Things that I needed to apply
3. How many type of visas
4. How many visas can I get
5. Can I use those visa for working

Polar Bear

Polar bears roam the Arctic ice sheets and swim in that region's coastal waters. They are very strong swimmers, and their large front paws, which they use to paddle, are slightly webbed. Some polar bears have been seen swimming hundreds of miles from land—though they probably cover most of that distance by floating on sheets of ice.
Polar bears live in one of the planet's coldest environments and depend on a thick coat of insulated fur, which covers a warming layer of fat. Fur even grows on the bottom of their paws, which protects against cold surfaces and provides a good grip on ice. The bear's stark white coat provides camouflage in surrounding snow and ice. But under their fur, polar bears have black skin—the better to soak in the sun's warming rays.
These powerful predators typically prey on seals. In search of this quarry they frequent areas of shifting, cracking ice where seals may surface to breathe air. They also stalk ice edges and breathing holes. If the opportunity presents itself, polar bears will also consume carcasses, such as those of dead whales. These Arctic giants are the masters of their environment and have no natural enemies.
Females den by digging into deep snow drifts, which provide protection and insulation from the Arctic elements. They give birth in winter, usually to twins. Young cubs live with their mothers for some 28 months to learn the survival skills of the far north. Females aggressively protect their young, but receive no help from their solitary male mates. In fact, male polar bears may even kill young of their species.

Polar bears are attractive and appealing, but they are powerful predators that do not typically fear humans, which can make them dangerous. Near human settlements, they often acquire a taste for garbage, bringing bears and humans into perilous proximity.

e. They can't swim

3. What thing that protects polar bear against cold surface and provides a good grip on ice?
a. Claw   b. Fat   c. Paw   d. Fur   e. Skin

4. What is the specialty of polar bear?
a. Strong swimmer
b. Good jumper
c. Great diver
d. Strong climber
e. Fast runner

5. Polar bear is ....... in their environment.

Short Story

Click  here to read the story, enjoy!

Summary

Well, this is only my point of view of these short story. The title is The School, written by Donald Barthelme. Actually I haven't fully got what these short story tells... The plot of these story is in a school, most like deadly school. I call it deadly school because there is tragedy almost in every corner and nothing seems to be live long. The words in these story is well arranged which make me really confuse with the meaning.. I mean there are many mystery message and humor maybe behind every words and sentence and I think the author wants the readers to explore these story which make these short story very good to read! In my opinion, the conclusion is these story contain many metaphor of the story's plot with the real life. I mean these story could be metaphor for how fragile life is and how the years spent in grade school can actually be fairly tragic, despite there being actual death. I couldn't give the full summary because I haven't fully understand these short story, so I'm sorry for that. Thank you.

Project: How to Manage Your Emotion and Stay Calm

Hello my name is Syifaulqulub. I'm a freakin' calm guy. Let me show you some tips and tricks to hide manage your feeling and to be calm-looked stay calm.

I'll show you tips and tricks when you have to face these situations:

Situation 1: Getting bullied.
When you getting bullied, just let your emotions flow away. If you can't do it, try to convince your self to be strong and show them if you're better than other. If they still don't give a respect for you, you don't have to give a shit anymore for them, just leave them and unfriend them or you can't report them as spams.

Situation 2: Friendzoned.
Well, this is hurts. If you have a crush with your best friend and he/she thinks you're only their friend, try to show your feeling to your crush (elegantly), maybe by asking "Should I smile because we are friends? Or cry because we are never be anything anymore?". If you failed, you have to pretend like you're dead as soon as possible. Nope, you have to move on...

Situation 3: Cheated.
I don't know the ways to solve this situations. Just stay calm and make yourself busy with yourself. Don't cheat. If you're unhappy, just leave.

Situation 4: Forever alone.

Try to make a fake girlfriend or boyfriend. Maybe by making a fake twitter account and get some conversation with it. Truth hurts and lies worse. So I won't lie, I feel sorry for you bro. Life is hard. But, you'll always get your family with you.

Those are some situations and trips that I can share with you right now. I'm tired, I'll share other situations and trips later. Thank you for your visit, sorry for the freaky things. No offense.

National Exam

National Exam or Ujian Nasional (UN) in Bahasa is a standard evaluation system of primary and secondary education in Indonesia. National exam is used as a parameter of students capability to continue their education. The students will get the result of the exam as a mark for continuing their education to the higher level. The mark is called NEM.

National Exam doesn't work well. The concept of national exam is great but it's not implemented well on the field. There are so many lacks of National Exam such as cheaters, answer keys, lacked question sheets, and many more. National exam is also contaminated by corruption. The government looks silly in this case.

The conclusion is there is another way to test the capability of student, for example is a kind of test like SERU3. It's more challenging and fairer. If the government wants to continue National Exam, they have to fix as many problems of National Exam.

School's Environment

For your instance, I study at 3 Senior High School Bandung. The building is not really good, but I think it needs an expansion. The environment in 3 SHS is pretty well, there are many kind of plants and trees in there that make the air cooler (only on ground floor). There are also some gardens and ponds in 3 SHS. The sanitation is pretty good, I'd like to thank to the janitors especially Mr. Ishak who always bang the table and knock the fence keep my classroom tidy and clean everyday. The toilets are clean, but it have some problem with the lightning and watering.

Let's talk about the canteen as known as bazaar in 3 SHS. Some people are sure if bazaar is a healthy canteen, but I'm not sure. The food seller usually used the water for boiling or cooking oil over and over without replace it. This is a disgrace but I love Bazaar's Nasi Timbel and Avocado Juice, both are delicious.
Well, that's my opinion about my school's environment, sorry for the frigidity.

Muhammad Imam Nasrullah is a student of 3SHS Bandung. His friends usually call him Anas. I don't know when he was born and where he was born. He is attractive and hyperactive sometimes. Her voice is just like a stereo, disturbing my ear actually even his voice is quite good.

He is about 170cm tall. Anas is a stylish guy! Nowadays he has just renewed his haircut, it's Top Collection and it's just amazing. He also likes to dress like a boyband, especially Korean boyband.

Anas often comes late to school. Anas lives in Kopo, southern Bandung. Kopo is a city full of commuters, that's why Kopo has a problem with traffic jam. That's why he often comes late, but there are other reasons why he comes late.

Anas is ambitious guy, he always does something in spirit. He likes to watch korean movie, especially Running Man. He often spent his time in school just for watching those movie all day long. One thing that becomes the specialty of Anas, he rarely charges his gadget in his house and I don't know why.
